Welcome to the Lee’s Summit Scribes, a writing group offering a supportive community to writers of all genres based in the Kansas City area. Regular meetings occur on the third Monday of each month. Check our Calendar for upcoming events.
Writers from all genres are welcome! You needn’t be a professional writer to join our ranks; writers from all skill levels are welcome.
Once each month, members get together in an informal setting to socialize, share their latest news, listen to each other’s latest work, and discuss the process of writing. Typically meetings alternate between guest speakers, special topics, and read-and-comment sessions. During these “Read and Comment” sessions, members take turns sharing short passages from their works-in-progress, after which their fellow Scribes offer constructive commentary, praise, and suggestions to make the work stronger.
Meetings are currently held in the Meeting Room at Unity Village. (Here is a Map. Upon entering Unity Village, follow the signs to the Bookstore parking lot, enter through the rounded wooden doors). Doors open at 6:45pm for social time and the regular meeting begins at 7:00pm.
Occasionally, guest speakers will be invited to regular monthly meetings. Speakers add important information about the process, business, or day-to-day work of writing. Topics vary, ranging from navigating the publishing process to how to write a believable fight scene.
Once in a while, Scribes members will participate in special events, like the annual Literary Conference at Longview Community College in Lees Summit. Other special events may include writer conferences, business of writing seminars, and individual author book signings.
Website and Social Media
You can find Lee’s Summit Scribes on Facebook. Look for “The Summit Scribes ~ Lees Summit, Mo.” and ask to join the group.
The purpose of the Summit Scribes Facebook Group is to inform members of upcoming events and opportunities related to writing, to encourage and inspire members to improve their own writing craft, and to share our knowledge (and angst) about the business of writing. We will not be using this group page to publish our own writing, and please limit all self-promotion to an announcement and external link to your writing.
You can also follow us online at www.SummitScribes.com. Join our mailing list to receive announcements and updates via email, or follow our RSS feed. Active members may feature their published works on the Books page of the Summit Scribes website.
Membership dues are $24 per year. As a new member, we ask you to attend up to two meetings without paying dues, just to make sure our group is what you are looking for! Dues are collected in January of each year, and membership dues are prorated for new members joining mid-year.
